What is Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic autoimmune inflammatory condition that primarily affects the joints but may also involve other organ systems. It commonly presents with joint pain, swelling, stiffness, and reduced function, often affecting joints on both sides of the body. Symptoms may develop gradually and progressively get worse without treatment leading to joint damage and deformities. Early treatment and longitudinal care are important components of management.

Common Patterns

RA more commonly affects women during the child bearing age and beyond

  • Involvement of hands and feet is very common
  • Prolonged morning stiffness > 45 minutes is typical
  • Difficulty using the hands and reduced grip strength
  • Frequently cause dry eye symptoms and sometimes, skin nodules
  • If untreated, can result in the joint damage and deformities
